Every growing business knows that having an awesome team is essential. Great businesses are built on great systems driven by exceptional teams, taking your vision beyond what you ever imagined.
We all know that having a fantastic team is crucial. Each member contributes their unique strengths, giving 100%, and constantly reaching new heights. However, having an awesome team doesn’t happen automatically.
This week, I had a conversation with a business owner overwhelmed with managing a large team while still being involved in day-to-day operations. He asked, “How do I get everyone on my team on the same page?” This is a common challenge for many business owners, but addressing it is essential for growth. So, here are my four tips to building an exceptional team:
For a team to perform at a high level, you need a culture that supports everyone in clearly defined roles. Without clear roles, team members won’t know what they’re meant to do or what success looks like. Creating a supportive culture takes dedication, time, strong leadership, and perseverance. Nobody’s team becomes awesome overnight. Here’s a tip to get you started:
Each month, set a focus for what you want your business to achieve. Explain to your team in a 15-minute meeting what the goal is, why it’s important, and what success looks like. Make it visual, as people think in pictures, not words. Regular team meetings are vital. Start with a monthly meeting where you give each team member one or two action steps. Record these actions on a whiteboard and ensure everyone understands them.
Set a weekly 20-minute coffee break for the team to update each other on their progress and ask for help if needed. It’s important for team members to feel comfortable asking for help, showing their commitment to their tasks. At the end of the month, celebrate your wins together. This peer accountability ensures everyone is more likely to achieve their goals because they don’t want to let the team down.
When everyone achieves their tasks, it creates momentum and energy, resulting in a team culture where everyone works together. This method is effective because it involves group accountability and easy-to-execute tasks, especially at the beginning. Run a monthly focus meeting with mini tasks, set up weekly update meetings, and an accountability meeting each month. Make it fun with food and coffee to keep everyone engaged.
Culture is king. Starting with these tips can turn things around quickly. If you apply this, you’ll notice a significant shift in results, mindset, and momentum within just seven days.
